LOCATION:
DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED. Do not attempt if you cannot control your buoyancy and trim. This cave is extremely silty and has some tight restrictions. For some restrictions, you will need to be able to swim sideways for an extended period of time and not kick up the silt. Be familiar with pull and glide. I wouldn’t recommend this cave for backmount doubles- come at me bro, it’s okay, I’m still cute.
WC FACILITIES: No
FOOD SOLD HERE: No.
ACTIVITIES FOR NON-DIVERS: No.
CURRENT ENTRY FEE: $300 Pesos
SUMMARY: This is an amazing cave and definitely unlike most that you will encounter in the Yucatan. This is a cave that not many go to and for good reason- it’s for advanced divers only. Immediately upon entering the cave, you are presented with a tight crack in the rock that one must traverse sideways, lightly pulling yourself along white rock walls so as not to disturb the silt that covers everything. This goes on for roughly the length of half an American football field until it opens up to an area where you encounter a hydrogen sulfate layer above you and a saltwater layer below you, hence this area being called “The Rainbow Room”. Formations are delicate, and fragile, reminding one of Philo dough layers, and just as easy to break. Continuing down the line are more restrictions and the overhead getting lower and lower until you are presented with your first jump- over piles of white fluffy silt. This dive, again, is not for beginners. This cave will test you. Don’t be a rock star. Dive to your training and comfort only.
DIVE ENTRY :
You will need to take tanks down a rocky uneven path to the cenote’s edge. Be careful. Rocks are unstable and rocks in cenote are slippery.
